The very first design and work plan for the Gwadar International Airport were introduced in 2017. However, it wasn\u2019t until March 2019 when the foundation of the project was laid with a high-profile groundbreaking ceremony attended by Prime Minister Imran Khan. Construction work on the project also began in October 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction Cost of New Gwadar International Airport<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The construction cost of the New Gwadar Airport is estimated at PKR 55 Billion ($246 million). It is a mega project spanning 4,300 acres (17 square kilometre). This upcoming airport will have the capacity to handle 30,000 tonnes of cargo a year and accommodate narrow as well as wide-body aircraft, such as Airbus A380, Boeing 747 and 748.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Completion Timeline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to the master plan of the airport, it will have a 3,658 metres long runway, which will be 75 metre wide, enough to accommodate and handle the flight operations of large aircraft. The design and construction contract of the airport has been awarded to the China Communications Construction  Company by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in Pakistan. The work on the airport is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per a recent statement made by the Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal, the development work on Gwadar airport is progressing at a satisfactory pace. The facility will be completed and made operational on the recently announced deadline, i.e. March 23, 2023. \u201cIt will be a gift for the people of Balochistan on Pakistan Day,\u201d Ahsan Iqbal added. The project will also bring many new employment opportunities for the locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The under-construction airport project is located in Gurandani, 26 km northeast of the existing international airport in Gwadar, which is basically a small-sized facility inaugurated in 1984. The new international airport of the port city will be surrounded by state-of-the-art infrastructure based on a wide network of roads, which will further link it to the Makran Coastal Highway and other important arteries in the region for seamless connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
