Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday reaffirmed the government’s strong support for solar energy initiatives and launched a new mobile application, \u201cApna Meter, Apni Reading,\u201d<\/em> aimed at enhancing transparency in electricity billing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Prime Minister said the government had no intention of discouraging solarisation, which remains the world\u2019s most affordable source of electricity. He highlighted Pakistan\u2019s rapid adoption of solar power and reiterated the government’s commitment to facilitating further growth in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Solar energy is the future, and Pakistan is among the few countries where this transition is happening at a remarkable pace,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cApna Meter, Apni Reading\u201d<\/em> app\u2014available in five regional languages\u2014is designed to empower consumers by allowing them to submit their own electricity meter readings, thereby reducing instances of overbilling and promoting billing accuracy. PM Shehbaz said the multilingual approach would foster inclusivity and strengthen national unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of broader relief measures, the Prime Minister also announced the removal of the Rs35 Pakistan Television (PTV) license fee from electricity bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new app forms part of a larger reform agenda in the power sector, which includes revamping the boards of distribution companies (DISCOs), appointing professionals on merit, and cracking down on corrupt practices. The Prime Minister further revealed that the government had reached an understanding with banks to address the long-standing issue of circular debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, also present at the event, said the app would help curb overbilling and increase transparency through real-time digital tools. He emphasized that modern technology would play a central role in consumer protection and service improvement going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
