Lahore: Work has begun on the design and cost estimation of the Yellow Line Metro Train system’s cut-and-cover<\/em> project, which will run underground from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura. The project is being jointly developed by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to LDA sources, the Yellow Line will feature a trackless tram operating through a cut-and-cover tunnel system\u2014similar to the structure used at the Orange Line\u2019s Mall Road station. This method involves excavating a shallow trench, constructing the tunnel, and then covering it to restore the surface. It allows for underground development with minimal disruption to the environment and existing road infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importantly, the LDA confirmed that no trees will be cut and no green belts will be disturbed, making the project more environmentally responsible. The tramway will utilize 12 to 14 feet of road width on both sides of Lahore Canal Road. Once the underground route is completed, Canal Road will be restored for regular traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project also aims to establish a signal-free route for the underground tram, improving public transport efficiency and reducing travel time across the eastern corridor of Lahore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cut-and-cover method is ideal for shallow-depth transit systems where above-ground activity can be temporarily rerouted. Officials say the approach is well-suited to urban areas like Lahore, where protecting greenery and minimising surface disruption are key concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
