Lahore: The Punjab government has unveiled detailed plans for a new eco-friendly elevated expressway in Lahore, designed to ease chronic traffic congestion and improve daily commuting for thousands of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a high-level meeting chaired by Housing Secretary Noor ul Amin Mengal earlier this week, officials reviewed the proposal for a four-lane expressway running from Gulberg to Babu Sabu along the city\u2019s main stormwater drain. Once completed, the project is expected to benefit more than 70,000 passengers every day, reducing travel time between Gulberg\u2019s Main Boulevard and the M-2 Motorway to just 10 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the plan, the expressway will feature six major interchanges, with additional connections to integrate seamlessly with the Metro Bus and Orange Line Metro Train systems. Authorities say this will not only help reduce traffic bottlenecks but also cut carbon emissions, supporting the government\u2019s environmental commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The corridor will link key neighbourhoods and commercial hubs, including Canal Park, Shadman, Shama Chowk, Gulshan Ravi, Moon Market, and Bund Road, before connecting to the Babu Sabu Toll Plaza on the Lahore\u2013Islamabad Motorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials highlighted that the project\u2019s design incorporates modern infrastructure features such as multiple entry and exit points, landscaped green belts, advanced traffic management systems, and enhanced safety measures. Once operational, it is expected to shorten overall travel distances by nearly 82 kilometres across connected routes while providing a signal-free commuting experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting also discussed relocating major wholesale markets outside the city limits to ease inner-city congestion and developing a modern bus terminal near the motorway with direct access to the planned expressway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure smooth execution, the government has decided to set up a Lahore Traffic Decongestion Committee, while a comprehensive Environmental Impact Study will be carried out before the proposal is submitted for final approval to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
