Karachi: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Monday that the provincial government, with support from the World Bank, is pushing ahead with the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project to improve public transport in Karachi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to the media during a visit to the under-construction Taj Haider Bridge\u2014an important component of the Yellow Line BRT\u2014Memon said the bridge is in its final stages and will be completed and opened to the public within a week. Secretary Transport Asad Zamin and Project Director Zameer Abbasi also accompanied him on the inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister said the Pakistan Peoples Party-led Sindh government is committed to providing modern travel facilities to Karachi\u2019s residents. He announced that this week pink scooters would be distributed free of cost to women, while a large fleet of double-decker and electric buses is also expected to arrive in the city in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memon further said that during President Asif Ali Zardari\u2019s recent visit to China, discussions were held to establish bus manufacturing plants in Sindh, a step that would not only strengthen transport facilities but also generate employment opportunities. Chinese investors, he added, have also expressed strong interest in the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone, where new industries will be set up to create jobs for local youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing challenges faced by major transport projects, Memon acknowledged that delays often occur due to issues such as utility transfers. He pointed out that the Red Line BRT also encountered hurdles when institutions like PTCL and K-Electric demanded large payments. The government, he said, is in contact with utility providers to resolve such disputes and has directed the transport secretary to settle ongoing issues with K-Electric within 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, Memon said that once the Taj Haider Bridge is inaugurated, the Jam Sadiq Bridge will be demolished and rebuilt with modern features, including dedicated tracks for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists to ensure safe and accessible travel for citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
