Islamabad: Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi on Tuesday announced the construction of a 480-kilometre railway track between Karachi and Rohri, stating that the project will be completed within two and a half years after its foundation stone is laid in July 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing a press conference, Abbasi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had tasked him with reviving Pakistan Railways, including its digitalisation and the development of new tracks. He acknowledged that upgrading the country\u2019s rail infrastructure, much of which dates back to the 1800s, would be challenging but necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister also outlined plans for a major rail link from Rohri to Nokundi, covering approximately 900 kilometres, which will be developed in partnership with Reko Diq Mining Company\u2019s operating firm RDM. Under this plan, around 500 kilometres of new track will be laid, while nearly 400 kilometres of existing tracks will be upgraded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hanif Abbasi further detailed regional projects, saying eight routes in Punjab would be developed, a plan already approved by the provincial government. In Balochistan, a \u201cPeople\u2019s Train\u201d initiative worth PKR 4 billion is underway to enhance connectivity and make rail travel more accessible to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister noted that discussions have taken place with the Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments to improve branch lines, with further consultations planned. Work is also ongoing to upgrade the Sukkur Express.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By December 31, Abbasi said, all major railway routes would feature upgraded trains equipped with security cameras, onboard hostesses, and modern kitchens. Wi-Fi routers have already been installed at stations, and a mobile application will be introduced for ticket booking, supporting Pakistan Railways\u2019 digital transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, fibre-optic cables will be laid along 1,700 kilometres of track, and safety and security measures will be enhanced at Karachi and Lahore stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Karachi\u2013Rohri track and associated upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernise the country\u2019s railway network, improve passenger safety, and boost efficiency across major routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
