Rawalpindi: The long-awaited Rawalpindi Ring Road is set to become operational by the end of May, but without the construction of the Thalian interchange, as authorities prioritise early opening of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a senior official from the divisional administration, the project has entered its final phase. The main corridor has largely taken shape, while horticulture work has already begun along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials confirmed that the PKR 5 billion Thalian interchange will not be initiated immediately. Instead, authorities have decided to make the road functional through a temporary two-way carriageway at the point where the Ring Road meets the motorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Project Director Ashfaq Sulheri stated that while the interchange remains part of the approved plan, its construction will begin after the completion of the main Ring Road. He noted that the decision was taken to avoid further delays in opening the road to traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To manage the expected traffic load of over 18,000 vehicles entering the motorway from the Ring Road, work is currently underway to widen the Thalian section. In parallel, the National Highway Authority is expanding the adjoining service road to accommodate increased traffic flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to project officials, a revised PC-I has already been submitted, retaining the interchange within the overall scope. However, immediate efforts are focused on ensuring that the road becomes operational before the monsoon season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction activity has been accelerated, with work now being carried out in three shifts. The Soan Bridge has been completed, while work on the railway bridge is progressing, including girder casting. Asphalt work has also commenced, and more than 28 kilometres of the road has already been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities said that work on interchanges, bridges and road surfacing is being carried out simultaneously to recover delays caused by a three-month slowdown during the previous monsoon. October and November have been targeted to make up for lost time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanning 38.3 kilometres, the Rawalpindi Ring Road will feature five interchanges at Banth, Chak Baili Khan, Adiala Road, Chakri Road and Thalian. An industrial zone is also planned along the corridor to support economic activity in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project\u2019s cost has risen from an initial estimate of PKR 33 billion to PKR 47 billion. Officials indicated that any further escalation in costs will be adjusted at the project\u2019s completion stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
