The long wait for the Karachi-Lahore Motorway seems to be over now, as Prime Minister (PM) Mr Nawaz Sharif has laid the foundation stone of the project. Given the track record of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government when it comes to building roads, it looks like the Karachi-Lahore Motorway will finally be built.<\/p>\n
According to a news source, the project will be completed in four phases and in the first phase, a 136-km long six-lane motorway will be built between Karachi and Hyderabad at a cost of Rs 36 billion, and the first phase will be completed within 30 months.
\nIn the second phase, the motorway will link Hyderabad and Sukkur, and the completion of the third phase will link Sukkur and Multan. In the final phase, the motorway will be extended from Multan to Lahore.<\/p>\n
After the foundation stone laying ceremony (held near Nooribad), an agreement was signed between the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) and the National Highway Authority (NHA).<\/p>\n
While highlighting the importance of the Karachi-Lahore Motorway, the PM said the project would prove to be helpful for the country\u2019s progress, adding that the motorway would reduce travel time between the provinces and would also facilitate trade between them.<\/p>\n
The PM also said that the fourth phase (from Multan to Lahore) of the project would be completed by the FWO and lauded the organisation\u2019s services in the construction of highways in the country.<\/p>\n
He also unveiled the government\u2019s plans to develop motorways from Peshawar to Kabul and also from Khunjerab to Gwadar in future, adding that Afghanistan President Mr Ashraf Ghani had given his consent for the construction of a Peshawar-Kabul motorway.<\/p>\n
