Karachi: Due to an on-going shortage of funds, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is considering a proposal to hand all parks over to private parties for \u201cadoption\u201d while retaining their ownership status.<\/p>\n
According to a news source, the proposal was discussed at a meeting convened at the Governor House chaired by Governor Dr Ishratul Abad. There are approximately 152 parks under KMC and expressions of interest for three of these will be sought first.<\/p>\n
\u201cInitially, EOIs [will] be sought for Bagh-i-Ibne Qasim Park, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park, and Beach Avenue Park from private parties as part of a pilot project,\u201d said Parks and Horticulture Director Asadullah Shah. \u201cIf the government receives a good response, then a decision [will] be taken to offer more parks for adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to sources, some private parties have already expressed interest.<\/p>\n
KMC has dealt with a shortage of funds for a long time because of which parks are poorly maintained. Giving parks up for \u201cadoption\u201d can help generate revenue for the body as well as lead to the development of recreational facilities in these areas.<\/p>\n
