Islamabad: To help save many parts of Gilgit-Baltistan from facing a flood-like situation in over 600 lakes recently formed due to melting of glaciers, the United Nation Development Program (UNDP) is to introduce and fund projects under the Green Climate Fund (GCF), reported a news source. An amount worth USD 37 million is reserved for GCF.<\/p>\n
Due to increasing temperature, melting rate of glaciers has increased at a drastic level since 2001. Between 2001 and 2013 alone, 600 new glacial lakes were formed in the Himalayas and Karakoram Mountain Range, out of which 36 are marked as highly dangerous for the local settlers.<\/p>\n
Under the GCF, solid measures will be taken to save 10 districts of Gilgit-Baltistan and 5 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from floods. In the second phase of the project, over 250 schemes will be launched in Gilgit-Balitistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to block further hazards. Some of these planned schemes include massive plantation drives, construction of small dams, and laying of drainage systems to control water flow.<\/p>\n
In order to keep the local settlements safe from floods, weather forecast will be collected from 50 climate monitoring centres, while data of water incoming and outflow in rivers will also be measured. In addition to all of this, 65,000 women will be trained for home gardening.
