Lahore: Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) is holding talks with Punjab Irrigation Department to acquire 100 cusecs of water from BRB Canal in order meet the growing water requirement in the provincial capital by 2020, reported a news source. The information was revealed by WASA Deputy Managing Director Muhamad Naveed Mazhar while talking to media at Expo Centre Lahore.<\/p>\n
Reportedly, the underground water level in Lahore is dropping by one meter annually. To preserve water, its wastage has to be stopped, believes Mazhar. WASA is working in association with stakeholders on finding alternate sources of water and is also taking measures to stop the underground water level from declining at such an alarming rate.<\/p>\n
Mazhar briefed the media that WASA has finalised PC-1 to procure 100 cusecs of water from the irrigation department to make it part of the water distribution in the city. The authority is looking make the quantity reach 1,000 cusecs by 2035.<\/p>\n
Answering a question, Mazhar said that WASA has a total of 750,000 water consumers in Lahore but only 40,000 of these have water metres installed. To fill this gap, tenders are to be floated to install more meters. He also indicated of a possible rise in water tariff as the authority hasn\u2019t done so since 2004.
