Karachi: For safety of motorists, the federal government has decided to insure all motorways in the country, reported a news source. The government will also purchase helicopters for the quick rescue of people injured during road accidents.<\/p>\n
A summary in this regard has been sent by National Insurance Company Limited to the cabinet division for approval. The insurance cover is meant to provide financial assistance of up to PKR 500,000 to the families of those killed in road accidents. All vehicles on the motorways will be charged accordingly, with additional toll tax collected in terms of insurance payments.<\/p>\n
For cars, an additional toll tax of PKR 30 has been proposed. The recommended toll tax for coasters and busses has been set at PKR 50 and PKR 80, respectively.<\/p>\n
According to the proposal, the insurance policy will initially be implemented on the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2), and later on Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1). Insurance taxes will be imposed on motorists travelling on Islamabad-Murree Motorway after three months of policy approval. The taxes will be imposed in various phases inside Punjab and Sindh.<\/p>\n
The proposed plan also recommends a number of measures for providing medical facilities to the injured. Ambulance service centres will be set up every 50 km on the motorway. Additionally, construction of trauma centres has been proposed for every 100 km of road stretch.
