Islamabad: A technical evaluation of the Safe City project will be carried out before the Islamabad Police takes complete control from the Chinese partners \u2013 a news source quoted the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) (Headquarters) Sarfraz Ahmed Falki.<\/p>\n
Falki was answering the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat. The committee had taken up the Safe City project in which there is alleged to have been USD 124 million worth of corruption.<\/p>\n
The committee believed that the cost of the project was unreasonably high, and noted that relevant documents related to the project have gone missing in an effort to destroy evidence. It ordered the recovery of these documents.<\/p>\n
The committee chairman also directed the police to ensure that the Chinese company is bound to maintain the equipment for the project for at least 10 years.<\/p>\n
The DIG informed the senators that Huawei, which was in charge of maintaining the Safe City cameras until May this year, is now pressing for the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and the Police to take over.<\/p>\n
