Karachi: The Sindh government has announced its intention to equip government schools and hospitals with solar-powered water purifiers in its bid to meet the province\u2019s clean drinking water requirement, a news source reported. As per officials, the executive took this decision following orders from the Supreme Court-mandated water commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As per reports, the plan to install solar-powered reverse osmosis (RO) filtration units would be carried out in phases. Public Health Engineering Department Secretary Roshan Ali Shaikh stated that the government had decided to allocate PKR 2 billion for the first phase; of which PKR 500 million will be released during this fiscal year. In the first phase, the filters will be set up in 1,300 hospitals and 4,000 schools to test the outcome of the plan.<\/p>\n

As per the official, these filters will facilitate the provision of clean drinking water to the people while being run off the grid. For this purpose, the engineering department has asked the departments concerned to identify institutions which are unable to provide clean water, especially in remote areas where they have to spend a large part of their day fetching water.<\/p>\n
