Gilgit: A network provider has introduced 4G broadband services in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) with an aim to improve connectivity and promote tourism, according to a news source. This was commemorated with an official launch ceremony held at a local hotel in Gilgit. GB Chief Minister (CM) Hafeezur Rehman was the chief guest of the event. Read: Twenty tourism spots to be developed The CEO of the service provider, Irfan Wahab, talked about the difficulties of installing a fibre-optic cable network in the hilly GB terrain, and revealed that the area was previously served by Legacy VSAT satellite network technology. This was the reason that network connectivity in the district presented a number of challenges, which could hinder its progress as a popular tourist destination as well. As an alternative, he stated, his company utilised O3b satellite network technology to provide 4G services to GB. This satellite network consists of a number of satellites orbiting at distance of 8,000km away from the Earth.
