Islamabad: The federal government, under Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), has constructed 27 small and medium-sized dams in Balochistan, news sources reported on April 3. The construction of these dams has boosted the overall water storage capacity to 68,939 acre-feet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, the federal government intends to build 100 small dams to irrigate a wide area of parched land in the drought-stricken region. According to a report published last week, the government has completed 65 dams, which would improve the water supply to metropolitan areas for drinking water and residential purposes. Furthermore, the smaller dams will irrigate 25,850 acres of land. It was also said that the construction of the remaining dams will enhance water storage capacity to 9.016 million acre-feet (MAF)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the total water storage capacity of the country’s small and large dams is 14.349 MAF. Presently, Pakistan is a water-scarce country.
