Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Forestry, Environment, and Wildlife Department has shared that the forest cover<\/a> in the province has increased by 846.5 square kilometres during the last 11 years, according to a report published in the national dailies on April 16. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per the details, the KP Forestry, Environment, and Wildlife Department and Pakistan Space and Upper Atmospheric Research Commission (Suparco) conducted a study on \u2018quantification and documentation of temporal changes of forest cover\u2019 in KP from 2007 to 2018. The study showed an increase of 846.5 square kilometres (1.14% increase) in the forest-covered area because of the initiatives of the former government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the officials, the PTI-led government has launched the Billion Tree Tsunami project in 2014 and more than one billion saplings were planted by 2018. The government was stressed to increase its efforts to improve the health of forest ecosystems through a decrease in forest degradation and deforestation and enhancing forest biomass, says the document. The government plans to achieve this by ensuring the restoration, replantation, and conservation of forests. Moreover, the department is considering a proposal to tap into the transnational and national climate financing drawn from private, public, and other sources of financing to address climate change.
