Liaquatabad Town is located in the centre of Karachi. Named after Pakistan’s first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, it is considered to be a locality meant for the middle-income group. It is surrounded by North Nazimabad Town, Jamshed Town, Gulberg Town and Gulshan Town. It consists of 11 union councils: Firdous Colony, Super Market, Rizvia Society, Dak Khana, Sharifabad, Commercial Area, Qasimabad, Bandhani Colony, Mujahid Colony, Abbasi Shaheed and Nazimabad. Liaquatabad has a population of 448,484 people, according to the 2017 Census.
Laloo Khait, which accounts for a significant part of Liaquatabad Town, has an interesting history. Initially, the neighbourhood was a housing project meant to settle immigrants, right after the partition of India. It was purchased by Pakistan Public Works Department from a farmer named Laloo. The government then converted it into a housing area, comprising different blocks. The area was named after the farmer and is still known as Laloo Khait.
