Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) announced on Wednesday that it will take strict action against thousands of individuals who display wealth and high spending on social media and other digital platforms, but evade taxes or conceal their actual income and assets. The FBR said that anyone found underreporting their income or hiding assets while showing extravagant lifestyles online will be identified and penalized under the law.
The announcement highlighted the role of the newly established “Lifestyle Monitoring Cell,” functioning under the Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation, Inland Revenue of the FBR. The cell has been created as a specialized unit dedicated to ensuring stronger tax compliance and countering evasion through systematic monitoring of publicly available information.

The unit applies advanced analytical methods, including artificial intelligence and social media intelligence tools, to track visible displays of wealth and spending habits. These observations are then cross-checked rigorously against declared incomes and assets, enabling the FBR to detect any material discrepancies and uncover hidden sources of wealth that have not been reported for taxation purposes.
According to FBR officials, this initiative is a key part of the authority’s comprehensive strategy to broaden the tax base, achieve fiscal revenue targets, and promote fair, transparent, and equitable taxation across all segments of society. The FBR added that the move is also intended to increase accountability, ensure compliance among taxpayers, and prevent misuse of digital platforms to conceal affluence. By identifying unreported wealth and taking necessary action, the FBR aims to strengthen Pakistan’s overall tax system and create a more transparent financial environment.
