Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to prepare a detailed action plan outlining measures to improve tax collection and expand the country’s tax base.
The directive was issued during a meeting chaired by the prime minister on Tuesday to review the performance of the tax authority and discuss strategies aimed at strengthening revenue generation.
According to an official statement, the meeting focused on steps to broaden the tax net and enhance the efficiency of the tax collection system. Senior government officials, including the finance minister and top FBR representatives, attended the session.
During the meeting, the prime minister stressed that increasing tax revenue was essential for maintaining economic stability and supporting development initiatives. He instructed the FBR to take concrete steps to improve its tax collection mechanisms and ensure greater transparency in the process.

Sharif also called for the use of modern technology and data analytics to identify potential taxpayers and curb tax evasion. He emphasized that while strict action should be taken against tax defaulters, honest taxpayers must also be facilitated to encourage greater compliance.
Officials from the FBR briefed the prime minister on ongoing initiatives designed to improve revenue collection and shared plans aimed at strengthening the overall taxation system. They assured the prime minister that efforts were underway to address existing challenges and improve institutional performance.
The prime minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the tax authority in its efforts to enhance revenue collection. He also directed officials to conduct regular reviews to monitor progress on the proposed measures.
The meeting concluded with instructions for the FBR to submit a comprehensive action plan detailing the steps it will take in the coming months to increase tax collection and broaden the country’s tax base.
