Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved the hiring of transaction advisers to advance the next phase of the Peoples Green Transport Project, which aims to introduce 1,000 electric buses across Karachi under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The approval was granted during a meeting of the PPP Policy Board chaired by the chief minister. The session was attended by provincial ministers Sharjeel Inam Memon, Saeed Ghani, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, and other senior officials.

Officials informed the board that the project had already passed its technical evaluation and is aligned with the province’s broader goals of sustainable and environmentally friendly public transport. To avoid delays, the board decided to continue with the previously appointed transaction advisers instead of initiating a new selection process.
The advisers will now begin reviewing a proposal submitted by a private consortium for the phased deployment of the electric bus fleet. If found viable, the project will move to the implementation stage.
According to the plan, 600 electric buses measuring 12 meters and 400 buses measuring 8 meters will be rolled out under a 10-year concession agreement. Operators will be compensated on a per-kilometer basis, and the government will take ownership of all assets at the end of the contract period. Ten depots will be established across the city to support bus operations.

The board also reviewed progress on two other major infrastructure projects: the 39-kilometer Shahrah-e-Bhutto high-speed corridor connecting Korangi Creek Avenue to the M-9 Motorway, and the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone. The Peoples Green Transport Project is part of Sindh’s push to modernize Karachi’s public transport system, reduce emissions, and provide reliable commuting options to the city’s growing population.
