ABOUT GT ROAD LAHORE
The Grand Trunk Road of Lahore, also known as GT Road, is one of South Asia’s oldest roads, which was first completed in the 16th century. It runs across Bangladesh’s Chittagong to Howrah in India, passes through Delhi, Amritsar and continues towards Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar in Pakistan, before ending in Kabul, Afghanistan. The 2700 km road holds immense historical value and the area alongside it houses a number of national monuments.
Over the past decade, the part of this road in Lahore has been readjusted and connected with a network of other important arteries in the city. Meanwhile, real estate developers launched multiple housing schemes on GT Road, turning it into one of the most popular mixed-use real estate developments in the Punjab province.
HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT
GT Road was known as “Shahre Azam” or the “Great Road” during the Mughal era. Later, during the British rule, it was called the “Jarnali Sarak” or “General’s Highway” because, at the time, this route was used by soldiers more than traders. This well-constructed road, which dates back centuries, was used by Alexander the Great and all other conquerors who came to South Asia after him, according to Professor Ashraf Khan, Director of Taxila Institute of Asian Civilisation (TIAC), who weighed in on the historical significance of GT Road during an interview with DAWN.com.
