ABOUT NAZIMABAD KARACHI
Nazimabad was a piece of barren land when Pakistan came into existence. There were only some small Balochi and Sindhi settlements. Pakistani government acquired the land from the tribal leader, Masti Brohi Khan. The purpose of this acquisition was to resettle refugees, who had migrated and were living in small ‘jhonpri’ (tents). To honour the contributions of the second Governor General and Prime Minister of Pakistan, Khawaja Nazimuddin, this suburban area was named Nazimabad. According to a report published in a local newspaper, “Nazimabad’s plots were sold at reduced prices to immigrants who had been characterized as ‘Mohajirs’ in the 1951 census. The new residents were given plots at subsidized rates of 3.5 rupees per square yard, most of which were 216 square yards but the ones off the main roads could go to 600 square yards.”
During the 1960s and 1970s, Nazimabad was the hub of cultural and intellectual activity in Karachi. It was considered a posh locality, as a large number of Karachi’s elite class lived in the area. Later, during the 1990s, many people shifted to better housing localities. When the devolution of municipalities was initiated in the year 2001, Karachi Division was further divided into 18 towns. A large chunk of Nazimabad i.e. Block 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 were included in Liaquatabad Town. Now, Nazimabad has 7 blocks, where Block 1-5 have residential units and Block 6 and Block 7 constitute the commercial areas. It is an affordable, middle-class housing area.
