Rawalpindi: The Punjab Highway Department has directed the National Engineering Services Pakistan (Nespak) to review the design of three planned underpasses on Peshawar Road, as the government prepares to begin construction on a PKR 8 billion project in early April.
According to officials, the design had already been approved by the Planning and Development Department. However, a fresh review has been sought to ensure smoother traffic flow between Saddar and Qasim Market, particularly by improving the layout of link roads to prevent bottlenecks.
The project involves the simultaneous construction of three underpasses along one of Rawalpindi’s busiest corridors, which handles over 250,000 vehicles daily. Authorities aim to complete the work before the monsoon season.

Preparatory work, including the relocation of utility infrastructure, is currently underway. Relevant departments and service providers have been instructed to expedite the shifting of electricity, gas, and communication lines to clear the construction corridor.
Officials said traffic will not be fully suspended during construction, with at least one lane on each side expected to remain open to minimise disruption.
Meanwhile, land acquisition is in progress to facilitate the expansion of service lanes along the route. Authorities have initiated the process to acquire additional land, with compensation to be determined in line with market rates.
The project is part of broader efforts to ease congestion and improve traffic management on key urban arteries in Rawalpindi.
