Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert for several parts of Pakistan, warning of medium to high flood risks from July 20 to 23 due to a strong monsoon system and an approaching westerly wave.
In a hydrological situation alert, the authority said heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and upper Punjab, increasing the risk of flash floods in hill torrents, seasonal streams and low-lying areas.
The NDMA warned that river flows across major river systems are likely to rise significantly during the forecast period. Medium to high flood levels are expected in the River Chenab at Marala and the River Jhelum upstream of Mangla, while high flows are also forecast in the River Kabul and its tributaries, particularly near Nowshera.
Rapid increases in water levels are also expected in the Swat, Panjkora and Chitral rivers, as well as tributaries of the Jhelum basin and transboundary nullahs originating from the Pir Panjal range.
The authority cautioned that urban flooding may occur in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, Lahore and Sheikhupura, as well as Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda and Mardan.
The NDMA has advised provincial and district authorities to remain vigilant, implement contingency plans and closely monitor the evolving situation. Residents living near rivers, nullahs and hill torrents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and follow official advisories.
