Islamabad: The Government of Pakistan has allocated PKR 5 billion in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2026-27 for relocating a 102-kilometre section of the Karakoram Highway between Thakot and Raikot. The news has been sourced from an article on September 24.
According to the details, the project has an estimated cost of PKR 502.6 billion and involves realigning sections of the N-35 route affected by dam projects along the Indus River.
The relocation will include road realignments, bridges, and tunnels to maintain the highway’s connectivity as surrounding areas change due to reservoir construction.
The Karakoram Highway connects Northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan with other parts of the country and serves as a route for passenger and freight traffic, tourism and access to communities in the northern areas.
The Thakot-Raikot relocation is part of the government’s broader plans for infrastructure development along the Indus corridor. Funding for the project is expected to be provided over multiple years, given its total estimated cost. The Government has also linked the project with the infrastructure objectives under URAAN Pakistan, particularly in relation to connectivity and regional development.
