Gilgit: Gilgit-Baltistan’s tourism sector has recorded a strong start to the season, with a noticeable increase in both foreign and domestic visitors across key destinations, officials said.
Data from the regional tourism department shows that applications for climbing and trekking permits from foreign adventure tourists have already exceeded figures recorded during the same period last year. More than 1,000 applications have been received so far, compared to around 850 by March last year, indicating growing interest ahead of the peak summer season.
The tourism season in Gilgit-Baltistan typically begins in May, though visitor activity starts earlier during the spring blossom period, which peaks in late April. Authorities noted that tourist inflows have increased since Eid ul Fitr, particularly in Skardu and surrounding areas.

Foreign tourists visiting open areas do not require permits, while those planning to trek or climb in restricted zones must secure approvals in advance. Travellers from countries including Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are among those showing interest in the region during the early season.
Officials said access to the region remains stable, with flight operations from Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi running regularly, and road connectivity via the Karakoram Highway in good condition.
Gilgit-Baltistan is home to five of the world’s 14 peaks above 8,000 metres, including K2, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum-I, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum-II, making it a major destination for mountaineers and adventure tourists.
Last year, the region received around 2,200 foreign adventure tourists, 24,000 foreign visitors without permits, and nearly one million domestic tourists during the summer season. Officials expressed optimism that tourist numbers will continue to recover this year, supported by steady demand and improving travel conditions.
Stakeholders in the hospitality sector also reported higher-than-usual bookings for this time of year, reflecting positive momentum for the season ahead.
