Rawalpindi: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is expected to inaugurate two major infrastructure projects in Rawalpindi—the Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road and the GPO Underpass on The Mall—shortly after Eidul Azha.
Initially, the inauguration of the flyover was planned for this week, but it was postponed due to the chief minister’s engagements in Lahore. Officials have now confirmed that both projects will be inaugurated together after Eid.
The Nawaz Sharif Flyover, located at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road, has been completed at a cost of PKR 2.113 billion. The 1,915-foot-long, 52-foot-wide structure is designed to ease traffic congestion in the area, benefiting nearly 79,000 vehicles daily. The flyover is also a critical link to the upcoming Rawalpindi Ring Road. Around 8 kanals and 11.5 marlas of land were acquired for the project, with PKR 317.6 million allocated for land acquisition. Construction was completed in a record time of 120 days.

The GPO Underpass, a dual-barrel one-kilometre-long structure on The Mall, is being built at a cost of PKR 4.6 billion. It will run from TM Chowk in front of the General Headquarters (GHQ) to the Military Hospital. Once operational, the underpass is expected to benefit over 250,000 vehicles, significantly improving traffic flow along one of Rawalpindi’s busiest corridors.
Provincial Minister for Works and Communications Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth recently visited both project sites to review progress and inauguration preparations. He praised the rapid development and reiterated the provincial government’s commitment to improving travel infrastructure across Punjab. Officials noted that all resources are being mobilised to ensure timely completion and high-quality standards for both projects, which are part of a broader plan to reduce traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility in Rawalpindi.
