Gilgit: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched a solar panel scheme in Gilgit-Baltistan to tackle the region’s longstanding electricity shortages through renewable energy solutions.
The initiative aims to provide solar energy systems to households and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), offering a total capacity of 58.8 megawatts. Under the scheme, 147,873 verified beneficiaries will receive solar panels free of cost, while beneficiaries will be responsible for arranging batteries, inverters, and transportation.

Applications will be accepted online through the government portal and at district administration offices. Officials said a selection process, including technical evaluation and district-level scrutiny, will ensure transparency and merit-based allocation.
Highlighting the importance of renewable energy for Pakistan’s future, the prime minister emphasized that the scheme will improve the quality of life for residents in remote areas and contribute to sustainable development in Gilgit-Baltistan.
