Islamabad: Pakistan Railways is set to introduce a major digital transformation initiative aimed at modernising freight operations and strengthening real-time tracking systems across its network.
According to official project documents, the initiative is part of a broader digitisation programme under the Railway Advance Infrastructure Network (RAIN), which is being described as a revenue-focused upgrade in the department’s operational history.
The project includes the development of a 1,700-kilometre fibre optic backbone to support digital railway operations, improve communication systems, and enable advanced data-driven management across services.
Of the planned fibre network, around 700 kilometres will be built using railway-owned infrastructure, while approximately 1,000 kilometres will be developed in partnership with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO). The project also incorporates bandwidth transmission through public-private partnership arrangements.

A key component of the initiative is the introduction of a fully digital freight management system, which will replace manual processes with automated documentation, tracking, and operational monitoring.
The system is expected to improve transparency and efficiency in freight handling while enabling real-time tracking of cargo movement across the country.
The digitisation plan also includes GPS-based tracking systems for locomotives and rolling stock, allowing better monitoring of train movement, operational performance, and route management.
Officials say the initiative is aimed at improving overall efficiency, reducing delays, and bringing Pakistan Railways in line with modern digital transport systems.
