Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and World Bank Country Director Bolormaa Amgaabazar on Monday reviewed progress on the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) and agreed to accelerate work on key water and sanitation infrastructure initiatives.
The meeting, held at the CM House, focused on implementation challenges, project timelines and measures to strengthen Karachi’s water supply and sewerage systems.

The chief minister said improving access to safe drinking water and modernising the city’s water and sewerage network remained among the Sindh government’s key priorities. He said KWSSIP aims to provide safe drinking water to nearly two million Karachi residents.
Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab informed the meeting that chlorination stations had been shifted to designated locations, with commissioning under way. Water quality testing is expected to begin by July 30. Murad directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) and project teams to complete commissioning and testing activities without delay and ensure compliance with water quality standards.
The meeting was also informed that KW&SC had achieved full coverage of its operation and maintenance costs, described as a major institutional milestone under the reform programme.
Reviewing infrastructure works, the meeting was informed that preparations were under way for joint integrity verification of the 96-inch pipeline along a 2.7-kilometre common corridor. Bridge rectification and piling works had also commenced, with related activities scheduled for completion by August 20.

The meeting reviewed progress on the K-IV Augmentation project, with the World Bank having provided conditional no-objection. The project’s advertisement is expected to be published shortly.
The two sides also discussed a comprehensive metering plan, digital monitoring, SCADA implementation and measures to reduce non-revenue water. A pilot metering programme will be launched before large-scale installation of system meters.
