Islamabad: The Reko Diq copper-gold mining project in Balochistan has reached a major milestone with the signing of a USD 440 million agreement between Barrick Gold Corporation and Japanese machinery giant Komatsu for the supply of heavy mining equipment.

Under the five-year deal, Komatsu will deliver a fleet of ultra-class mining machinery to support the operational phase of the Reko Diq mine, which is expected to begin production in 2026. The equipment package includes Komatsu 980E-5 haul trucks from the United States, P&H 4100XPC AC electric rope shovels from Milwaukee, PC7000-11 mining excavators from Germany, and WE2350-2 electric wheel loaders from Texas.
This agreement marks Komatsu’s first major deployment of equipment in Pakistan and underscores international confidence in the Reko Diq project. To support the operation, Komatsu will establish a local subsidiary — Komatsu Pakistan Mining (SMC-Private) Limited — which will provide technical assistance, training, and after-sales service. The company is also investing in its Dubai regional hub to manage logistics and spare parts supply.
Barrick Gold President and CEO Mark Bristow said the partnership with Komatsu aligns with the long-term vision for Reko Diq. “This project is a significant investment in the future of mining in Pakistan. Our collaboration with Komatsu is essential in building one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits into a world-class operation.”

Peter Salditt, President of Komatsu’s Mining Business Division, highlighted the importance of the project: “The scale and complexity of Reko Diq demand proven, high-performance equipment. We’re proud to support this transformative project with advanced machinery.” The Reko Diq mine is expected to be a major contributor to Pakistan’s economy, attracting foreign direct investment and generating significant infrastructure and employment opportunities in Balochistan.
