Chitral: The much-awaited Chilimjusht Festival, also known as Joshi, has officially kicked off in the three Kalash valleys of Bamburet, Rumbur, and Birir today, marking the beginning of a five-day celebration in Lower Chitral district.
Running from May 12 to May 16, this annual spring festival celebrates the vibrant Kalash culture, bringing together locals and visitors alike. Preparations for the festival have been in full swing, with roads leading to the three valleys repaired and hotels reopening their doors to welcome guests. Kalash men and women have been bustling in the Chitral bazaar for the past two weeks, purchasing goods and preparing for the festivities. Houses are adorned with colorful decorations, and local households have stocked up on milk, cheese, and dried fruits to serve guests throughout the celebrations.

The festival will feature traditional Kalash dances, with men and women moving in a circle to the rhythm of drums. Dressed in their traditional attire—vibrant clothes adorned with gold and silver jewelry, and elaborate headgear—Kalash women and men will dance and sing to celebrate the festival and seek blessings for the safety of their herds and crops.
Kalash festivals are known for their rich cultural heritage, drawing attention to the community’s traditions, music, and dances. Despite a possible decrease in tourist attendance this year, the Chilimjusht Festival continues to be a time for the local Kalash people to unite, celebrate their unique culture, and offer prayers for prosperity in the coming year.
