Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has registered 2,403,831 new taxpayers during the fiscal year 2024-25, according to a recent statement by the government in the National Assembly. In the same period, the FBR received 2,452,090 new tax returns, resulting in tax collections amounting to Rs1.73 billion.
The Finance Ministry informed the National Assembly that the FBR is collaborating closely with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and provincial governments to integrate data systems aimed at broadening the country’s tax base. These efforts include coordination between the Broadening of Tax Base (BTB) wing and District Tax Offices (DTOs), which have so far enforced over 448,683 tax returns from newly registered taxpayers this year.

In a bid to increase compliance, the government shared cell phone data of 458,342 unregistered or non-filing individuals with telecom companies to facilitate temporary disconnection of SIMs. So far, 276,564 SIMs have been restored after users registered and filed their income tax returns.
Parliamentary Secretary for Finance Khawaja Izhar highlighted that the number of taxpayers has increased by 8 million from 2022 to 2025, with 3.1 million new taxpayers added in the current year alone. He reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding the tax base to strengthen the national economy and enhance public services.
