Lahore: The Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC), in collaboration with UNICEF and the University of Lahore, on Tuesday launched the Hudyara drain revitalisation project to tackle water pollution and improve environmental conditions.
The initiative was inaugurated by Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmad Mian and PMDFC Managing Director Zahid Aziz. Under the project, floating wetlands will be installed along a 500-metre stretch of the drain at a cost of PKR 14.6 million. Using specific aquatic plants for natural purification, the wetlands aim to reduce odor, filter pollutants, and enhance underground water quality.

Officials said an additional 500 metres will be added in the next phase, with plans to eventually extend the project to 10 kilometres. An advanced digital water testing system will also be deployed to monitor quality and ensure transparency in results.
Experts from the National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), including Dr Afzal, briefed participants on the ecological and health benefits of the system. Representatives from UNICEF, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Punjab, and the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) lauded the initiative as a model that can be replicated in other polluted drains across the province.
