Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has included two major infrastructure schemes in its latest development plan — the overhaul of the Islamabad Expressway service road and the construction of a new road linking Margalla Road to the city’s boundary, where it will connect to a proposed route of Rawalpindi.
According to officials, the planning and revenue departments are finalising the land acquisition process for the new road. The proposed link aims to improve intercity connectivity and ease traffic congestion on existing routes.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad Expressway service road, particularly the stretch between Sohan and Koral, has been in poor condition for years, marked by potholes and rutting. The long-awaited repairs are expected to improve safety and traffic flow for thousands of commuters who use the route daily.

In addition to these new projects, work continues on the T-Chowk flyover — a PKR 1.4 billion project located at the junction of GT Road and the Islamabad Expressway. The three-lane, 1.1-kilometre-long structure is nearly 46% complete and is expected to be finished within 150 days. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the project last month.
CDA officials also confirmed that the Shaheen Chowk project has been awarded and will be formally inaugurated soon. Another major development on the agenda is the construction of an underpass at Khyaban-i-Iqbal (Margalla Road) intersecting 9th Avenue, which is expected to ease congestion in the busy corridor connecting government offices and educational institutions.
The civic body stated that these projects are part of a broader effort to modernise Islamabad’s transport infrastructure and address long-standing traffic bottlenecks across the city.
