Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has introduced a draft law aimed at promoting a cashless economy by making digital payments mandatory for businesses across the province.
Under the proposed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Digital Payment Bill 2026, shops and commercial centres will be required to display QR codes to facilitate transactions. The law will also extend to educational institutions, clinics, and hospitals, which must accept digital payments without charging additional fees to customers.

The draft legislation proposes penalties for businesses that refuse to comply, while monitoring officers will be authorised to conduct inspections to ensure implementation.
To encourage adoption, newly registered businesses will be offered tax exemptions for two years, and banks and service providers will be required to provide technical support.
The bill, presented in the provincial assembly, is yet to be approved.
