Karachi: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a PKR 100 million initiative to upgrade the city’s emergency response and fire safety infrastructure, aiming to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve public safety.
On the directives of Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, KMC has issued tenders for the rehabilitation, expansion and establishment of key fire and rescue facilities across the city.
As part of the initiative, the Emergency Response Centre will be upgraded to enhance rescue operations in Karachi’s coastal areas, particularly at Hawksbay Beach, where drowning incidents increase during weekends and holidays. The upgraded facility will feature improved coordination, communication systems and emergency response capabilities to enable faster deployment of rescue teams and equipment.
The project also includes the establishment of a new fire station in Maripur to serve nearby industrial areas, reducing response times for fire and rescue emergencies. In addition, Rainbow Centre Fire Station, Lyari Fire Station and the KMC Fire Headquarters will undergo rehabilitation to strengthen operational readiness.
Mayor Wahab said the upgrades are intended to improve the city’s capacity to respond to fires, industrial accidents, traffic incidents, natural disasters and coastal emergencies while bringing emergency services closer to international standards. He added that protecting lives remains KMC’s top priority through continued investment in modern emergency infrastructure.
