Lahore: Pakistan Railways has unveiled comprehensive restoration and modernisation plans for the historic Lahore and Taxila railway stations, aiming to preserve their heritage while upgrading passenger facilities and promoting tourism.
According to a Pakistan Railways spokesperson, the master plans have been finalised following directives from Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, with the Punjab government extending support for the projects on the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The restoration will focus on conserving the stations’ original architectural character and historical significance while improving infrastructure, accessibility, safety and passenger amenities.
At Lahore Railway Station, planned works include structural rehabilitation, roof and drainage repairs, heritage-style lighting, refurbishment of the main concourse and reservation office, restoration of platforms, and the addition of modern passenger facilities, including a family lounge and information centre.
The Taxila Railway Station project includes restoration of the historic ticket office and verandahs, improved pedestrian access, landscaped public spaces, upgraded parking and public facilities, and the adaptive reuse of the former goods warehouse as a café and restaurant. Heritage displays highlighting Taxila’s historical legacy will also be introduced.
Pakistan Railways said both projects will follow internationally recognised heritage conservation principles, with unauthorised additions removed to restore the stations’ original appearance while introducing modern amenities.
The railways minister said the initiative forms part of a broader programme to restore historic railway stations across the country, preserve railway heritage, enhance passenger services and support tourism.
