Lahore: With just days remaining until the Basant Festival, kite trading in Lahore has picked up pace, drawing large crowds to licensed markets across the city. Localities including Mochi Gate, Mozang, Liberty, Baghbanpura, and Shahdara saw a surge of shoppers purchasing kites of various sizes and designs, creating a festive atmosphere.
However, many buyers expressed concerns over rising prices. Standard kites and twine are reportedly selling at higher rates than usual, while limited stock has left some customers returning home empty-handed. Shopkeepers assured that fresh supplies would arrive in the coming days.

The Punjab government has allowed limited trading of kites and related items until February 8, after which a complete ban on manufacturing and sale will take effect. Currently, 2,246 traders have been authorized to operate across Lahore, with over 2,500 applications for registration received so far; 163 applications remain under review, while 95 were rejected. The registration process will continue until the trading window closes.
Decorative installations and kite-themed displays at Liberty Chowk and other key locations have added to the celebratory mood, signaling that preparations for the festival have reached their peak. Despite the excitement, authorities and traders alike continue to warn of shortages and rising costs as the festival approaches.
