Lahore: Preparations are underway for a limited-scale Basant festival in Lahore, with authorities proposing strict safety regulations to ensure a controlled and incident-free celebration.
According to official sources, the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore has submitted detailed recommendations to the Punjab government for holding a two-day Basant festival on Saturday and Sunday. The proposal suggests restricting festivities to select areas of inner Lahore, including Shahi Qila, Mochi Gate, Bhati Gate, and Rang Mahal.
A high-level meeting chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb reviewed the recommendations and discussed administrative, safety, and regulatory measures for the proposed event.
Under the safety plan, the use of metallic, nylon, or chemical strings will remain strictly banned. Only cotton or starch-coated strings will be permitted, and all approved kites and strings will feature barcodes to ensure traceability. Unregistered kite sellers and manufacturers of unsafe strings will face legal action.

Authorities have also proposed additional safety measures, including the mandatory use of bike antennas and neck guards for motorcycle riders to prevent accidents. Entry of motorcycles in designated Basant zones will be restricted during the festival, and safety nets or wire-protection systems will be installed along major roads.
Officials emphasised that any potential Basant celebrations will only take place under strict supervision and compliance with safety protocols. The move marks the first formal consideration of the festival’s revival since the Punjab government imposed a complete ban in 2019 due to public safety concerns.
If approved, the limited-scale Basant festival will aim to revive Lahore’s cultural tradition while maintaining public safety and order.
