Lahore: The Punjab government has expanded its flagship housing initiative, Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar, to include joint families, allowing them to access interest-free loans for the expansion of their existing homes.
Under the revised framework, joint families will be eligible for easy-installment financing to add living space, a move aimed at supporting the traditional joint family system while addressing growing housing needs in the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the expansion would help promote social harmony and improve living conditions, describing it as part of the government’s broader commitment to housing development and welfare.

According to official figures, the provincial government aims to construct 160,000 homes by June 2026 under the scheme. Families without land will also benefit through the Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar initiative, under which plots will be allotted and interest-free loans provided. In the first phase, 1,534 plots will be allocated through a lottery in cities including Jhelum, Kasur, Faisalabad and Lodhran.
Officials said more than 1.88 million users have registered for the housing programme, with over 1.06 million applications currently under review. So far, 67,197 homes have been completed, while 53,843 are under construction. Total loan disbursements have reached PKR 164.66 billion, with a reported recovery rate of 99 percent.
The chief minister has also directed authorities to expedite the release of pending installments, enhance project funding, and formulate policies to ensure continued support for families in the event of the death of a primary applicant.
