Karacgu: The Sindh government has announced plans to launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in September and induct 1,000 electric buses into the province’s public transport fleet by the end of the year as part of efforts to modernise urban transport.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Officials informed the meeting that the EV taxi service would be launched in September, while 1,000 electric buses would be added to the fleet in phases by year-end. They also said 50 new double-decker buses are expected to arrive in Karachi in October.
The meeting approved new Peoples Bus Service routes between Larkana and Qambar, and Qambar and Shahdadkot to improve public transport connectivity. Officials further said a section of the mixed traffic lane on University Road would be opened in September to help ease traffic congestion.
The senior minister directed authorities to complete all depots for the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project within the stipulated timeline and ensure that the newly approved bus routes become operational without delay.
Mr Memon said the EV taxi service and electric buses would provide commuters with modern, comfortable and environmentally friendly transport options while supporting the province’s transition towards sustainable public transport.
