Islamabad: The government has allocated PKR 30 billion for the long-delayed Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway (M-6) project in the current fiscal year, while unveiling an execution plan that divides the motorway into five sections to accelerate its implementation.
The details were shared during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Communications, chaired by Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, where officials briefed members on the project’s latest progress.
The committee was informed that the M-6 Motorway will be developed in five sections: Hyderabad-Tando Adam, Tando Adam-Nawabshah, Nawabshah-Naushahro Feroze, Naushahro Feroze-Ranipur, and Ranipur-Sukkur.
Officials said the project requires PKR 70 billion during the current financial year, against which PKR 30 billion has been allocated. Construction is expected to begin during the current fiscal year after delays of more than five years.
Under the execution plan, the Hyderabad-Tando Adam and Tando Adam-Nawabshah sections will be developed through the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The Naushahro Feroze-Ranipur and Ranipur-Sukkur sections will be financed by the Islamic Development Bank, while the Nawabshah-Naushahro Feroze section will be funded by the OPEC Fund.
The committee also reviewed the status of Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) schemes and was informed that approximately PKR 2.6 trillion of the total PKR 3.7 trillion PSDP outlay comprises throw-forward projects. Officials further said that around PKR 60 billion allocated to the National Highway Authority (NHA) had been reduced in the federal budget due to austerity measures and emerging security requirements.
Expressing concern over constrained road maintenance spending in recent years, the committee directed the Ministry of Communications to submit a detailed report on the utilisation of maintenance funds, particularly in Sindh. It also sought updated progress reports on several delayed road infrastructure projects, including the Quetta-Zhob Road, Keti Bandar Road and Shahdadkot Bypass.
