KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rain, dust storms and thunderstorms across several districts of Sindh until July 27, warning that isolated heavy downpours could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the Met Office, a low-pressure area over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining areas, along with strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea, is influencing weather conditions over southern and central parts of the country.
Moderate to heavy rain is expected in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Matiari, Jamshoro and Shaheed Benazirabad, with occasional breaks.
Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are also likely in Ghotki, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Sukkur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Larkana, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze and Thatta.
The PMD warned that heavy rainfall could trigger urban flooding in several low-lying areas, particularly in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Matiari and Shaheed Benazirabad. It also cautioned that strong winds and lightning could damage vulnerable infrastructure, including solar panels, electricity poles and billboards.
For Karachi, the Met Office forecast partly cloudy, warm and humid conditions, with thunderstorms possible on the city’s outskirts and isolated light rain or drizzle over the weekend. The city’s temperature is expected to range between 28°C and 37°C.
The department advised farmers to plan agricultural activities according to the weather conditions and ensure the safety of livestock, adding that the prevailing hot and humid weather is likely to ease during the forecast period.
