Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has distributed more than PKR 100 million in interest-free loans among 109 beneficiaries under the Maizban Tourism Programme to promote community-based tourism and create livelihood opportunities.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Tourism, Culture, Archaeology and Museums Malik Adeel Iqbal distributed the loan cheques at a ceremony in Peshawar.
Under the programme, eligible beneficiaries in Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Chitral and Dir are receiving interest-free financing to establish or upgrade homestays and improve accommodation facilities for tourists.
Speaking at the ceremony, Iqbal said the initiative aimed to strengthen local economies by enabling communities, particularly young people and women, to benefit directly from tourism-related opportunities.
He said the government was focusing on community-based tourism to increase local incomes, create employment and support sustainable economic growth.
The special assistant said the provincial government would work to expand the programme so that more individuals and communities could access tourism-related economic opportunities.
