Karachi: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has decided to introduce a fully digital payment system through the State Bank of Pakistan’s Raast platform, becoming the first municipal institution in the country to adopt a cashless financial model.
Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced that from the new fiscal year beginning in July 2026, all payments to KMC vendors, contractors and other approved beneficiaries will be transferred directly to their bank accounts through Raast.
According to the mayor, the move aims to improve transparency, financial discipline and efficiency in municipal operations by replacing manual payment processes with real-time electronic transfers.

KMC said the system has been developed in line with the payment framework approved by the Accountant General Sindh. Officials noted that the digital mechanism would help streamline payment processing, strengthen financial oversight and reduce administrative costs.
KMC Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro briefed officials on the project’s implementation strategy and rollout timeline, highlighting measures being taken to ensure smooth adoption across relevant departments.
The initiative is part of the corporation’s broader digitalisation efforts and is expected to support improved financial governance and service delivery within the municipal administration.
