Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday approved the immediate rollout of new sustainable power supply projects, including a 100MW solar initiative for Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and multiple short- and long-term measures to improve electricity availability in Gwadar.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the decision was taken during a meeting held to review ongoing reforms in the power sector. The premier directed all relevant ministries and institutions to work in close coordination to ensure reliable, affordable, and uninterrupted electricity, particularly for Gwadar Port City.
The prime minister issued special instructions to initiate the 100MW solar project in GB, calling it essential for the region’s welfare and long-term economic development. He emphasised that the project must deliver continuous and environmentally friendly power.

He added that a plan had been finalised to stabilise voltage levels in the city within the next six months, along with steps to improve supply for both domestic and commercial consumers.
As part of short-term measures, 9.7MW of solar capacity will be installed in major government institutions over the next 8 to 12 months. For long-term sustainability, a 40MW project is also planned to support Gwadar’s growing demand.
Officials informed the meeting that electricity needs in Gwadar are expected to rise by 30% in the coming years due to industrial activity, port expansion, and urban growth.
