Gwadar: The federal government has approved plans to introduce solar-based solutions at Gwadar Port to address the area’s long-standing electricity shortages and water supply challenges.
According to official sources, the initiative will focus on powering key facilities, including the port, the Gwadar International Airport, and the city’s desalination plant, through solar energy. The plan also includes the establishment of microgrids to ensure stable and affordable power for industrial and residential needs.

A committee has been formed to oversee the transition, tasked with identifying suitable sites for solar plants and finalising implementation timelines. The government believes the move will reduce operational costs, support industrial growth, and improve living conditions for residents in the coastal city.
The project is being developed under the Prime Minister’s broader vision for clean energy adoption and sustainable development. Officials said the initiative will not only help stabilise Gwadar’s energy supply but also provide a reliable water source for its population through solar-powered desalination.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, calling it a crucial step towards making Gwadar self-reliant and better positioned to serve as a hub under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
