Rawalpindi: The Punjab government is preparing to launch feasibility studies for a series of significant infrastructure upgrades aimed at easing traffic congestion in Rawalpindi. Key projects include the construction of underpasses at Chandani Chowk and Marrir Chowk, as well as a flyover on IJ Principal Road.
These initiatives are expected to be incorporated into the Annual Development Program (ADP) for the fiscal year 2025–26. According to a senior official from the Housing and Urban Development Department, the proposals for these projects were submitted by local lawmakers, including Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi from NA-56 and Danyal Chaudhry from NA-57.

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has been tasked with conducting the feasibility studies and designing the projects. For the initial phase, each project has been allocated Rs. 40 million for the feasibility studies.
The proposed projects include:
- Chandani Chowk Underpass: A single-barrel underpass that will connect Rawal Road to Murree Road, aimed at improving traffic flow at one of Rawalpindi’s busiest intersections.
- Marrir Chowk Underpass: Another underpass to ease congestion at this key junction.
- Flyover on IJ Principal Road: A two-lane flyover stretching one kilometer from Siddique Chowk to IJ Principal Road, designed to create a signal-free corridor and reduce travel times.
“These projects are designed to create signal-free corridors and ease growing traffic congestion at key intersections in Rawalpindi,” the official said. “The Chandani and Marrir Chowk underpasses will not only reduce travel time but will also improve safety and serve as alternative routes to relieve pressure on existing roads.”
Construction is set to begin once ongoing work on The Mall and Adiala Road is completed. Furthermore, the government is also considering additional traffic solutions, such as a flyover or underpass at Kutcheri Chowk. Preliminary groundwork and feasibility studies for this additional project are already in the planning stages.

The official emphasized that the planned infrastructure projects would not only improve traffic flow but also contribute to environmental improvements, reduced emissions, and stimulate local economic activity.
These upgrades come as Rawalpindi continues to face increasing traffic congestion, making the proposed projects a vital part of the city’s development plan. With the feasibility studies expected to begin soon, residents can anticipate smoother traffic conditions and enhanced connectivity in the near future.
